RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate clinical periodontal parameters after treatment using the Minimally Invasive Surgical Technique (MIST), Modified Minimally Invasive Surgical Technique (M-MIST), and/or any technique for papilla preservation, such as Entire Papilla Preservation (EPP), modified-papilla preservation technique (M-PPT), or simplified-papilla preservation technique (SPPT). METHODS: The focus question was "For patients with periodontal intrabony defects (P), what is the best minimally invasive regenerative approach (I), comparing MIST, M-MIST, and papilla preservation techniques' outcomes (C) to improve PD, CAL, GR, and periodontal stability (O)?" An online search was conducted on PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase. Only randomized clinical trials and case series with a minimum of 10 enrolled patients were included. The risk of bias was evaluated using the Critical Appraisal tools in JBI Systematic Reviews. The meta-analysis compared the data obtained for the periodontal parameters analyzed, and the heterogeneity was verified. RESULTS: After the screening, nine articles were included. Seven studies applied MIST and its modifications; two used M-PPT, one SPPT, and one approached EPP. A general statistically significant PD reduction and CAL gain were noted between the groups, comparing baseline and follow-up for all articles, independently of the technique or materials used. Also, all studies showed a non-significant increase in the gingival recession. Four studies had a low risk of bias, four had a moderate risk, and only 1 had a high risk. Moderate heterogeneity was found in one analysis for CAL (65.73%); moderate and substantial heterogeneity was found in the PD results (71.91% and 89.19%); and no heterogeneity was found within all analyses for gingival recession (0%). CONCLUSION: MIST, M-MIST, and papilla preservation techniques demonstrated their potential and efficacy to improve periodontal conditions of sites with intrabony defects with minimal morbidity.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to assess the newly formed bone and the remnant biomaterial by comparing four different bone grafts used to treat critical-size defects, associated or not with the non-resorbable membrane. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two calvaria critical-size bone defects were created in 50 male Wistar rats. They were divided into blood (G1), autogenous (G2), bioglass (G3), hydroxyapatite (G4), and xenograft (G5) groups, associated or not with e-PTFE. The experimental periods were 15 and 45 days. Sections were prepared for histomorphometric assessment. All data were analyzed by the mixed-effects model with multiple comparisons (significance level, p < .05). RESULTS: A similar level of new bone was observed for all groups, associated with a high level of vascularization. G1 and G2 ensured sovereignty over the greater quantity of new bone. A non-significant result was reported comparing groups with and without membranes. No significant result was found between the experimental synthetic biomaterials (G3 and G4). G5L achieved 22.0% of new bone after 45 days (p > .05). All groups had a stable volume of biomaterial kept in the short term (p > .05). G2 was the best material for new bone formation and final volume of biomaterial, followed by G4 < G5 < G3. Thus, it is possible that G4 had a better degradation profile among the experimental groups. CONCLUSIONS: The best results were found in the autogenous group, with higher resorption and integration; non-significative new bone was found among the experimental groups; and the regeneration of critical bone defects using an e-PTFE barrier did not present significant results on new bone formation.

RESUMO

Objectives: The goal of this systematic review was to analyze, in randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs), regenerative techniques used to treat peri-implantitis (PI). Methods: Three databases (PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, and On-Line Knowledge Library) were accessed, applying the PICO strategy (Population [P], Intervention [I], Comparison [C], and Outcomes [O]), with the following focused questions: (i) "In patients who received regenerative treatments for peri-implantitis (P), is the regenerative surgical treatment (I) clinically effective and predictable compared to non-regenerative (C) to treat PI (O)?"; and (ii) "In patients who received regenerative treatments for peri-implantitis (P), the regenerative approach (I), compared to non-regenerative (C), significantly increase the prognosis and implant survival rate in the mid- and long-term (O)?" The inclusion criteria were RCTs published in English between 2012 and 2022, with at least a one-year follow-up, which applied regenerative techniques to treat peri-implantitis. Cochrane's collaboration tool for assessing the risk of bias was used. Main results: Nine articles were included with 404 patients (225 females and 179 males; mean age of 60.44 years). One study evaluated patients after 48 months and another after 88 months. The techniques and devices used were: (i) implantoplasty with Er:YAG laser, (ii) blood concentrate (growth factors), and (iii) EMD, with no statistically significant outcome. Two studies considered the use of titanium granules with a significant increase in radiographic bone identification, whereas regenerative techniques with bone graft (autogenous, alloplastic, and xenograft) were the majority chosen, associated or not, with a collagen membrane. Xenograft had better results radiographically when compared to the autogenous bone graft and presented better results for bone level. There was an overall decrease in bleeding on probing, independent of the control or test group, and a reduction in pocket depth in the groups analyzed. Titanium granules, EMD, Er:YAG laser, and CGF had non-significant results; better results were observed when using bone grafts. The RoB showed a low risk in four studies (44.44%), three with moderate (33.33%), and two with high risk (22.23%). Conclusion: Surgical regenerative treatment was a predictable option in the management of PI and in improving the clinical parameters of peri-implant tissues in the short term, mainly when using porous titanium granules, alloplastic bone grafts, and xenografts.

RESUMO

Purpose: To assess the literature comparing histologic levels of osseointegration for titanium vs zirconia dental implants. Materials and Methods: This systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021236781). Electronic and manual searches were carried out through the PubMed/MEDLINE, PubMed Central, and Embase databases with a platform-specific search strategy combining controlled terms (MeSH and Emtree) and text words. The articles were selected by two independent investigators who evaluated the articles based on the criteria for eligibility. Results: A total of 17 articles were included. All were preclinical studies. The populations included dogs (27.55%), minipigs (14.28%), rats (14.28%), and rabbits (43.89%); and the implantation site varied among the mandible (36.82%), maxilla (9.04%), tibia (17.64%), skull (10.70%), and femur (25.80%). A total of 370 titanium (Ti) implants and 537 zirconia (Zr) implants were evaluated. The average osseointegration (% bone-to-implant contact) for Zr was 55.51% (17.6% to 89.09%), and for Ti was 58.50% (23.2% to 87.85%). There was no statistical difference between studies at the 2-month follow-up (P = .672), but this difference was significant at 1 and 3 months (P < .001). Conclusions: Within the limitations of this review, Zr implants had a similar level of osseointegration compared to Ti implants. Nonetheless, because these findings are based on preclinical research, all data must be carefully examined.

RESUMO

The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the actual efficacy of Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) on the periodontal clinical parameters when used concomitantly to the nonsurgical periodontal treatment. Searches were conducted through PubMed Central, Online Knowledge Library, Science Direct, Scielo, and Cochrane databases from 2012 to 2022. The focused question was "In patients with periodontitis, will the probiotic L. reuteri, when administrated as an adjunct to nonsurgical periodontal treatment, compared to the nonsurgical periodontal treatment alone, result in better clinical outcomes?" The following information was extracted from the articles: author and year of publication, type of study, follow-up, sample size and number of defects, and clinical characteristics and details. All included studies were qualitatively assessed using the Critical Appraisal tools according to the Joanna Briggs Institute. Twenty-four articles were full-text reading, but only 9 articles were included. The number of patients enrolled was 287, aged between 18 and 56 years. All periodontal parameters were evaluated. The "follow-up" varied (14, 40, 84, 90, 180, and 360 days). Most articles supported the clinical benefits of L. reuteri as an adjunct to SRP compared to SRP alone. A common finding at the beginning period was thatno statistically different results were observed between the test and control groups; otherwise, at the last period, a significant improvement was found in favor of the probiotic use (p = 0.001) for all the clinical parameters. The use of L. reuteri as an adjunct to nonsurgical periodontal treatment may result in significantly better clinical outcomes than nonsurgical periodontal treatment alone; but the conclusion must be carefully interpreted because of the heterogeneity found among the studies.

RESUMO

The goal of this systematic review was to verify the marginal bone loss (MBL) and other clinical parameters comparing external hexagon (EH) and Morse taper (MT) implants when they were evaluated within the same study. The focused question was, "For patients (P) treated with external connection (I) or Morse taper (C) dental implants, were there differences in the marginal bone crest maintenance after at least three months in occlusal function (O)"? As for the inclusion criteria that were considered, they included clinical studies in English that compared the MBL in implants with EH and MT, with follow-up of at least three months, that were published between 2011 and 2022; as for the exclusion criteria, they included publications investigating only one type of connection that analyzed other variables and did not report results for the MBL, reports based on questionnaires, interviews, and case reports/series, systematic reviews, or studies involving patients with a significant health problem (ASA Physical Status 3 and above). The PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science databases were screened, and all of the data obtained were registered in a spreadsheet (Excel®). The Jadad scale was used to assess the quality of the studies. A total of 110 articles were initially identified; 11 were considered for full-text reading. Then, six articles (four RCTs and two prospective studies) met the eligibility criteria and were included in this study. A total of 185 patients (mean age of 59.71) were observed, and the follow-up ranged from 3 months to 36 months. A total of 541 implants were registered (267 EH and 274 MT). The survival rate ranged between 96% and 100% (the average was 97.82%). The MBL was compared among all periods studied; therefore, the common assessment period was the 12-month follow-up, presenting greater MBL for EH than for MT (p < 0.001). A mean MBL of 0.60 mm (95% CI 0.43-0.78) was found after the same period. BoP was reported in 5 studies and plaque index was reported in 4 (2 with more than 30%). Deep PD was observed in three studies. High heterogeneity was observed (I2 = 85.06%). Thus, within the limitation of this review, it was possible to conclude that there is higher bone loss in EH than in MT implants when evaluating and comparing this variable within the same study. However, the results must be carefully interpreted because of this review's limited number of clinical studies, the short assessment period, and the high heterogeneity found.

RESUMO

Objective: This integrative review aimed to identify studies comparing the periodontal health in patients wearing multibracket orthodontic appliances and clear aligners. Materials and methods: An integrative literature search was performed through different databases, PubMed/Medline, PMC, and the Cochrane Library. This work was submitted to a search strategy following the PICO method and included the focus question: "Could the chosen orthodontic appliance change significantly the oral hygiene of the patient, impairing the periodontal health?" This work included analytical and controlled studies on humans published between 2005 and 2020, in the English language, establishing a comparison of the periodontal status in patients undergoing orthodontic multibracket and clear aligners therapies. The main periodontal indexes assessed were plaque index (PI), pocket depth (PD), gingival index (GI), and bleeding on probing (BoP). Results: The electronic research displayed 386 articles on PMC, 106 on PubMed, and 40 on the Cochrane Library. After removal, just 25 articles were selected for full-text screening, but just eight studies were eligible for this integrative review. It was enumerated that 204 patients were treated with aligners and 294 with multibracket orthodontic appliances, mainly elastomeric ligated brackets. Only the plaque index displayed a significant difference between the two groups and general data obtained showed a better control for periodontal health in the clear aligners. Limitations such as age, malocclusion severity, therapeutic choice, and different time measure was observed. In addition, the oral hygiene instruction and follow-up by a professional were different, and the role of malocclusion was not present in the studies. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, better results for periodontal health were found in the clear aligners. Therefore, more studies are necessary to affirm that aligners are synonymous with better gingival conditions in comparison with multibracket appliances. Other variables such as oral hygiene instructions, motivation, and supportive treatment tend to be more prevalent than the type of appliance itself in the periodontal evaluation.

RESUMO

The taxon Elasmobranchii (sharks and rays) contains one of the long-established evolutionary lineages of vertebrates with a tantalizing collection of species occupying critical aquatic habitats. To overcome the current limitation in molecular resources, we launched the Squalomix Consortium in 2020 to promote a genome-wide array of molecular approaches, specifically targeting shark and ray species. Among the various bottlenecks in working with elasmobranchs are their elusiveness and low fecundity as well as the large and highly repetitive genomes. Their peculiar body fluid composition has also hindered the establishment of methods to perform routine cell culturing required for their karyotyping. In the Squalomix consortium, these obstacles are expected to be solved through a combination of in-house cytological techniques including karyotyping of cultured cells, chromatin preparation for Hi-C data acquisition, and high fidelity long-read sequencing. The resources and products obtained in this consortium, including genome and transcriptome sequences, a genome browser powered by JBrowse2 to visualize sequence alignments, and comprehensive matrices of gene expression profiles for selected species are accessible through https://github.com/Squalomix/info.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the biaxial flexural strength (BFS), surface roughness (Ra) and micro tensile bond strength (µTBS) of two CAD/CAM materials after different surface treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For µTBS, 64 human molars were used and 32 blocks of resin composite (RC-Lava Ultimate) and polymer-infiltrated ceramic (PIC -Vita Enamic). The blocks and teeth were distributed into 16 groups according to the factors "surface treatment" (HF: 10% hydrofluoric acid; APA: Al2O3 sandblasting; SC: silicate-Al2O3 sandblasting; MEP: Monobond Etch and Prime) and "thermal cycling" (TC). After cementation, the blocks were sectioned into 1 mm2 bars. Half of the specimens were thermocycled and submitted to µTBS test. For BFS, RC and PIC discs were made and distributed according to the surface treatments and after mechanical cycling, submitted to BFS test. Roughness, EDS, SEM, and Weibull analyses were also performed. Data were analyzed by (1 or 2-way) ANOVA and Tukey test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: For RC, SC and HF after TC showed significantly higher µTBS values. For PIC HF after TC showed higher µTBS than the other groups. For RC, the BFS was higher for MEP than Al2O3 and SC. For PIC, none of the surface treatments influenced BFS. CONCLUSION: The highest µTBS for RC was obtained with SC followed by silanization and for PIC, HF followed by silanization. The RC showed lower strength after Al2O3 blasting. For PIC all surface treatments resulted in similar BFS.

RESUMO

In this paper, the authors review the field of motion detection and correction in nuclear cardiology with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging systems. We start with a brief overview of nuclear cardiology applications and description of SPECT and PET imaging systems, then explaining the different types of motion and their related artefacts. Moreover, we classify and describe various techniques for motion detection and correction, discussing their potential advantages including reference to metrics and tasks, particularly towards improvements in image quality and diagnostic performance. In addition, we emphasize limitations encountered in different motion detection and correction methods that may challenge routine clinical applications and diagnostic performance.

ABSTRACT Most of the current demands on mental health are issues that once arose from the Psychiatric Reform movement, which aimed to discontinue the mental asylum model in the treatment of patients suffering psychiatrically. Thus, the present research has sought to investigate patients treated at a CAPS (Centros de Atenção Psicossocial), their family relationships and the importance of them during the follow-up in these care centers faced with the challenges caused by the deinstitutionalization. Therefore, weekly visits were made at a CAPS located in a small town of Minas Gerais. From the observations made, questions were raised such as the importance of the family in the therapeutic support, the changes in family dynamics in the face of illness, development of selfreliance, violence occurrences with confinement suffered inside psychiatric wards, and power relations. Among the different themes addressed in this experiment, the importance given to the CAPS and family bonds by the users in the restoration of their autonomy stands out, as well the subjective burdens generated by the demands of care.

RESUMO

High dietary concentration of vegetable oil, particularly those rich in n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), can induce negative physiological effects including excessive lipid deposition in teleost fish. Omega-3 desaturase (Fat-1) of Caenorhabditis elegans is able to convert n-6 PUFAs to n-3 PUFAs and thus induces a low n-6/n-3 PUFAs ratio alleviating lipid deposition. In this study, we investigated the effects of dietary n-6 PUFAs on lipid metabolism of fat-1 transgenic zebrafish (Tg:fat-1), to explore the role of fat-1 in fish lipid metabolism. We first generated Tg:fat-1 zebrafish and assayed the effects of a low-fat diet (LFD) and a high-fat diet (HFD) prepared from soybean oil. Wild type zebrafish (WT) fed with HFD (HFD-WT) exhibited increased obesity and lipid deposition, especially in the abdominal cavity and liver. These defects were absent from HFD-Tg:fat-1. For each diet group, Tg:fat-1 exhibited significantly decreased levels of almost all hepatic lipid classes compared with WT. Expression levels of lipid synthesis-related genes and lipid deposition-related genes were markedly lower in the liver of HFD-Tg:fat-1 compared with HFD-WT. In contrast, the steatolysis-related genes significantly upregulated in HFD-Tg:fat-1. Then expression profiles of mitochondrial energy metabolism-related genes and ATP contents in the livers from LFD-WT, LFD-Tg:fat-1, HFD-WT, and HFD-Tg:fat-1 were determined. Our findings suggest that fat-1 protects fish from abnormal lipid deposition induced by high-vegetable oil feeding, through endogenously converting n-6 PUFAs to n-3 PUFAs. KEY POINTS: • fat-1 transgenic zebrafish (Tg:fat-1) can endogenously convert n-6 PUFAs to n-3 PUFAs. • Tg:fat-1 avoid serious abnormal lipid deposition induced by high-vegetable oil feeding. • fat-1 transgenosis effectively improved lipid metabolism and mitochondrial energy metabolism in zebrafish.

RESUMO

To compare gene loci considering a phylogenetic framework is a promising approach to uncover the genetic basis of human diseases. Imbalance of dopaminergic systems is suspected to underlie some emerging neurological disorders. The physiological functions of dopamine are transduced via G-protein-coupled receptors, including DRD5 which displays a relatively higher affinity toward dopamine. Importantly, DRD5 knockout mice are hypertense, a condition emerging from an increase in sympathetic tone. We investigated the evolution of DRD5, a high affinity receptor for dopamine, in mammals. Surprisingly, among 124 investigated mammalian genomes, we found that Cetacea lineages (Mysticeti and Odontoceti) have independently lost this gene, as well as the burrowing Chrysochloris asiatica (Cape golden mole). We suggest that DRD5 inactivation parallels hypoxia-induced adaptations, such as peripheral vasoconstriction required for deep-diving in Cetacea, in accordance with the convergent evolution of vasoconstrictor genes in hypoxia-exposed animals. Our findings indicate that Cetacea are natural knockouts for DRD5 and might offer valuable insights into the mechanisms of some forms of vasoconstriction responses and hypertension in humans.

RESUMO

With a digital revolution impacting nearly all industries and disciplines, the incorporation of digital technologies into dental offices and laboratories appears to be inevitable. Highlighting the use of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology, this case report demonstrates the development of a maxillofacial prosthesis after creation of a 3-dimensional printed surgical guide to enable accurate and predictable implant positioning to enhance overall facial prosthetic retention and comfort for the patient. The management of lost craniofacial hard and soft tissues due to congenital abnormalities, trauma, or, in this case, cancer treatment poses a multifaceted challenge to not only oral and maxillofacial surgeons but also general dentists, prosthodontists, dental laboratory technicians, and other dental and medical professionals. CAD/CAM technology may be viewed beyond its use for teeth reconstructions and intraoral implants and become an important tool for success when implant-supported maxillofacial prosthetic components are needed.

RESUMO

Vertebrates have greatly elaborated the basic chordate body plan and evolved highly distinctive genomes that have been sculpted by two whole-genome duplications. Here we sequence the genome of the Mediterranean amphioxus (Branchiostoma lanceolatum) and characterize DNA methylation, chromatin accessibility, histone modifications and transcriptomes across multiple developmental stages and adult tissues to investigate the evolution of the regulation of the chordate genome. Comparisons with vertebrates identify an intermediate stage in the evolution of differentially methylated enhancers, and a high conservation of gene expression and its cis-regulatory logic between amphioxus and vertebrates that occurs maximally at an earlier mid-embryonic phylotypic period. We analyse regulatory evolution after whole-genome duplications, and find that-in vertebrates-over 80% of broadly expressed gene families with multiple paralogues derived from whole-genome duplications have members that restricted their ancestral expression, and underwent specialization rather than subfunctionalization. Counter-intuitively, paralogues that restricted their expression increased the complexity of their regulatory landscapes. These data pave the way for a better understanding of the regulatory principles that underlie key vertebrate innovations.

It was evaluated protein concentrates by chemical composition, carbohydrates and proteins fractioning, and in vitro degradation kinetics in bovine and ovine ruminal liquid. Soybean meal (SM), shelled cottonseed meal, dried corn distillers grains (DDG), sunflower cake, and crambe cake (CC) were used. Their chemical composition, and fractioning of carbohydrates (A + B1, B2 and C) and protein (A, B1 + B2, B3, and C) were determined. The in vitro degradability was evaluated using ruminal liquid from three bovines and three ovines. The ingredients were incubated and gas production readings were performed on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96 and 144 hours after incubation. For the fractioning trial, a completely randomized design were used and for the gas production trial a 4x2 factorial scheme (four food and two species of animals) were utilized. The obtained means were compared by the Tukey test. To evaluate the kinetics of ruminal fermentation, the model of Gompertz was used. SM had higher amounts of CP in comparison to other foods, and the DDG showed the highest amount of total carbohydrates. The CC presented the highest A fraction of the CP. In the degradation trial, SM and DDG produced higher amounts of gas(mL g-1). The bovine's ruminal liquid provided higher gas production than the ovine's liquid. Among the foods evaluated, soybean meal has established itself as the best protein source to ruminants

RESUMO

In this paper we present a photogrammetry-based approach for deep-sea underwater surveys conducted from a submarine and guided by knowledge-representation combined with a logical approach (ontology). Two major issues are discussed in this paper. The first concerns deep-sea surveys using photogrammetry from a submarine. Here the goal was to obtain a set of images that completely covered the selected site. Subsequently and based on these images, a low-resolution 3D model is obtained in real-time, followed by a very high-resolution model produced back in the laboratory. The second issue involves the extraction of known artefacts present on the site. This aspect of the research is based on an a priori representation of the knowledge involved using systematic reasoning. Two parallel processes were developed to represent the photogrammetric process used for surveying as well as for identifying archaeological artefacts visible on the sea floor. Mapping involved the use of the CIDOC-CRM system (International Committee for Documentation (CIDOC)-Conceptual Reference Model)-This is a system that has been previously utilised to in the heritage sector and is largely available to the established scientific community. The proposed theoretical representation is based on procedural attachment; moreover, a strong link is maintained between the ontological description of the modelled concepts and the Java programming language which permitted 3D structure estimation and modelling based on a set of oriented images. A very recently discovered shipwreck acted as a testing ground for this project; the Xelendi Phoenician shipwreck, found off the Maltese coast, is probably the oldest known shipwreck in the western Mediterranean. The approach presented in this paper was developed in the scope of the GROPLAN project (Généralisation du Relevé, avec Ontologies et Photogrammétrie, pour l'Archéologie Navale et Sous-marine). Financed by the French National Research Agency (ANR) for four years, this project associates two French research laboratories, an industrial partner, the University of Malta, and Texas A & M University.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the performance in feedlot and the production of carcass and non-carcass components of lambs from the genetic groups Texel x Hampshire Down (THD), Texel x Ile de France (TIF) and Texel x Suffolk (TS). Seventeen castrated lambs were used, being six THD, six TIF and five TS. The average age and weight at the beginning of the experiment were, respectively, 120 days and 31.0±3.2kg. Lambs were fed lot for 51 days, where they received a daily commercial concentrate ration (18 percent CP and 74 percent TDN), in the proportion of 1.5 percent of body weight, and had free access to chopped in natura sugar cane. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) for weight gain, final weight and body condition score among the genetic groups. However, TS lambs presented greater (P<0.05) dry matter intake than THD and TIF lambs. Averages for DM intake as percentage of body weight were 3.9, 3.6 and 3.2 percent, respectively, for TS, THD and TIF. There was no difference (P>0.05) among genetic groups for feed conversion. Weights and dressing percentages of hot carcass were also similar among genetic groups. There were few differences among genetic groups for non-carcass components. TS lambs presented greater (P<0.05) percentages of intestines and weights of heart than the other lambs. It can be concluded that in the lamb production any of the genetic groups studied can be used, for their performance and the production of live weight components were quite similar.
